Matilda Kärkkäinen

Matilda Kärkkäinen‘s career took off in 2004 when she won third prize in the Jyväskylä Piano Competition.

In addition to her solo repertoire, she has played chamber music in Finland and abroad. She graduated from the Sibelius Academy in 2007, having studied first under Marita Viitasalo and later with Erik T. Tawaststjerna. She continued her studies at the University of Music and Drama in Vienna and at the Edsberg Chamber Music Institute in Stockholm. Since 2011, she has been studying for a doctorate in music at the Sibelius Academy.

Kärkkäinen achieved success in the Jyväskylä Piano Competition, and also came second in the Nordic Piano Competition in Nyborg. She was also awarded a special prize in the international Ciurlionis Competition in Lithuania.

In 2014 she released two discs of contemporary music, performing pieces by Alex Freeman and Osmo Tapio Räihälä.

Matilda Kärkkäinen now also teaches piano and piano accompaniment at the East Helsinki Music Institute and is a lecturer in accompaniment and a chamber pianist at the Sibelius Academy.
